Happy Engineers Day...!

To identify the great works done by our hard working engineers, each year 15th September is celebrated as Engineers' Day marking the Birth Day of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya, recognizing his contributions in the field of Civil Engineering in India. Today it gives us an opportunity to remember and cherish the works of Sir Visvesvarayya on the 152 birthday of this great son of India.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is known to be the greatest engineers of all times, who with his vision and dedication in the field of engineering made some exceptional contributions to India. Owing to his contribution he was honored with the highest state award of India, “Bharat Ratna”, in the year 1955.

Engineer par Excellence

·         He was the chief engineer during the construction of Krishna Sagar dam on the Kavery River. Krishna Raja Sagara Dam is still praised by everybody visiting it which is a brilliant proof of his genius.
·         The Block System was invented by him, which was a system of automated doors that closed in the conditions of overflow. The automatic doors which he devised to stop wasteful overflow of water, the water supply and drainage system which he planned for the city of Aden won high praise from engineers all over the world.
·         Many dams built by him in Bombay are still functional even till today.

"The curse of our country is laziness. At first sight everyone seems to be working. But in fact, one man works and the others watch him. As someone said with contempt, 'it looks as if five men are working. But really only one man works. One man will be doing nothing. One man will be resting. Another man will be watching them. Yet another man will be helping these three."

A human Being with Profound Values
·         Courage: many of the projects completed by him that India stands proud of today, would not have existed if it was not his will and conviction.
·         Dedication to work: Nothing was able to deter Sir, from his commitment to good work, his work was his worship.
·         Fearless Patriotism: when it came to India, even high perks given to Sir, by the British Government were not enough for him; he opposed everything and anything that was against the favor of his nation.
·         Fitness: Even at the age of 92, he was never dependent on comforts; he would not only walk by himself, but, take full participation in all proceedings.
·         Neatness: Every person having met Sir MV, proudly remembers his neat and fine clothing.
·         Perfectionism: There are many examples to show that even a little task that he took up, always completed to perfection. Even if it was to deliver a speech, he would think in advance, write and rehearse no. of times.
·         Punctuality: he was very famous for his punctuality; he was never late even by a minute and expected his people also to realize the importance of time.

"Remember, your work may be only to sweep a railway crossing, but it is your duty to keep it so clean that no other crossing in the world is as clean as yours."

Miracle…!

A little girl went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She poured the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even... The total had to be exactly perfect... No chance here for mistakes.

Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall's Drug Store with the big Red Indian Chief sign above the door. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention, but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!

'And what do you want?' the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice... ‘I'm talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages,' he said without waiting for a reply to his question…

'Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,' Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. 'He's really, really sick....and I want to buy a miracle.'

'I beg your pardon?' said the pharmacist.
'His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?'

'We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you,' the pharmacist said, softening a little.
'Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.'
The pharmacist's brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl,
'What kind of a miracle does your brother need?'
'I don't know,' Tess replied with her eyes welling up ‘I just know he's really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I want to use my money...'

'How much do you have?' asked the man from Chicago.
'One dollar and eleven cents,' Tess answered barely audible.
'And it's all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.'
'Well, what a coincidence,' smiled the man 'A dollar and eleven cents-the exact price of a miracle for little brothers.'

He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said
'Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the miracle you need.'

That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery. The operation was completed free of charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home again and doing well.
Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place.
'That surgery…' her Mom whispered '…was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost.'
Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost.....

ONE DOLLAR AND ELEVEN CENTS... PLUS THE FAITH OF A LITTLE GIRL…!

Stay tuned and expect miracles...!

Birthday...!

On my BIRTHDAY, however weird, uncanny or whimsical it may sound, I would like to share a POEM about AFTER-DEATH by Robert N. Test as find this the most opportune time to share it…!
To Remember Me...

Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face, or love in the eyes of a woman.

Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain.

Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren play.

Give my kidneys to one who depends on a machine to exist from week to week.

Take my bones, every muscle, every fiber and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk.

If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses, and all prejudice against my fellow man.

Give my sins to the devil.

Give my soul to God.

If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever…!

Now isn’t that ending line gives it a sense…?!?

Stay tuned and NEVER STOP LIVING…!

Walk the Talk...!?!

This could be considered as the sequel to my previous post or the liberal translation of my feelings and philosophies in my mother tongue, thanks to Girish Kuber...! Whatever you call or assume it, what is important is the CONTENT and it has a direct relation to my heart, I must say! Go read it and… Be Aware!

Anarchy…!

About 2500 years ago, a prince concerned by the consequences of life renounced the kingdom in search of Ultimate Truth and Peace and we had BUDDHA. About 500 years ago, again a prince disinclined to lure in the luxurious but slavish life of a ‘Sardar’ resolved to set his own kingdom with his own rules and we had SHIVAJI. About 100 years ago, a Barrister who could have lived a prince’s life by tying a blindfold for all the inequalities, injustice and dictatorship chose to do the otherwise and we had GANDHI.

The common thread between all these stories is – If egg is broken by outside force, life ends. If broken by inside force, life begins. Great things always begin from inside.

On Wednesday 17 August 2011 at this same place I have written about Anna Hazare’s ‘Revolution’ with the title ‘Protest…!?!’ and have raised just 5 questions, I am still awaiting the answer to at least one. Instead of answers to my questions what I hear is the NEWS with Anna’s Political VIEWS!

So why am I writing today? To claim that, exactly one year before, I was right OR I have forecasted the upshot of this activity at the outset OR to once again raise some fundamental questions in the light of these undesirable and obnoxious developments?

Well, to put it all together piece by piece, I will take the route of Aamir’s ‘Satyamev Jayate’, the supposedly most socially awakening talk show of the date. I would like to request all the readers to take a review of all the activities in this so-called Anti-corruption Revolution sequentially but this time not acting as an enthusiast and excited candle-march supporter, but a real social activist and analyst. You yourself will find very surprising lacunas and pitfalls right from the beginning as I wrote in my post ‘Protest’

These are not the solutions, not even the ‘Satyamev Jayate’. At the extent of optimism, these could be whistle-blowers or war trumpets but not the solution. The real solution is WITHIN and will manifest only by Evolution and not by some filmy, glamorous Revolution. I would, one more time, reiterate the fact that if EVERYBODY undergoes moral self-examination and just keep check on his or her INTENTIONS and not INCENTIVES (Team Anna and Aamir included), everything is going to be fine and we can SURELY have the INDIA, why, the WORLD of philosopher’s and thinker’s dreams.

Tell yourSELF 'If anybody can make a difference, it’s ME…!'

Writer...!?!

There is an annual function of Indian Society of Structural Engineers (ISSE) and I got this opportunity to design and develop Invitation Card for the same as well as provide a write-up for the Citation to Godse Sir to be presented to him with the 'Life-time Achievement Award'. Here is the image of Invitation and copy of the Citation.

Citation to be printed majestically and presented to Godse Sir

We, the founders and members of ISSE Pune, with heartfelt gratitude and absolute delight, take this opportunity to present the first ‘Life-time Achievement Award in the field of Structural Engineering and Consultancy’ to our dearest Godse Sir, the Living Legend and Lighthouse for all of us.

The life story and achievements of Godse Sir in the most adverse and discouraging conditions indeed has the potential for a full length featured movie and we have no intention to curtail it to fit in here. All we are attempting here is expressing our gratefulness and pride we share as we enjoy this fortune of being the part of the fraternity our GURU spearheads. In his honour lies our honour.

‘Nothing succeeds like success’ is the notion. Sir, YOU have proved it wrong with a new principle ‘Nothing commits like commitment...!’ With the genius of Engineer and passion of facilitator, YOU hardly ever thought of Structural Engineering as a Profession; it forever was an Obsession for YOU and YOU always went that extra mile for the most rational and not fractional solution to a situation. This will stand as a ‘Professional Ethics Lesson’ for the generations of engineers to come.

Sir, by leading from the front and setting a selfless example, YOU have set the Standards of Practice so high that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to match those, let alone surpass them. We are not only proud and indebted to have YOU as our idol, but feel more responsible to be worthy of the heritage you have structured and we have the fortune to inherit.

While we prepare to present this token of our gratitude to YOU, in the retrospection of your accomplishments, our minds are occupied with realization and our brains are confronting the question – ‘Do we really love and respect our profession like this...?’ Sir, we promise YOU and take a pledge to answer this question positively and proudly for years to come.

Wishing YOU long, healthy and content golden life, we thank you for being there for us... always!
